The Angels will put the finishing touches on a season-long 12-game, 14-day road trip with this upcoming series and are 6-3 so far on the trek. They are the only AL West squad with a winning record on the road this season (22-19) and took two of three meetings in Florida, including Wednesdays 6-5 victory in 10 innings at Sun Life Stadium. Mark Trumbo singled home Bobby Abreu for the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning and Michael Kohn set the Marlins down in order in the bottom half for the save, his first of the season. Abreu hit a two-run homer and Maicer Izturis added a solo shot, while Trumbo ended with three hits and a run scored for the Angels, who are three games off the lead in the AL West and have won 12 straight games when scoring four or more runs. Anaheim is also an MLB-best 30-12 on the road in interleague action since the 2007 campaign. Bobbys been having good at bats. It was good to see the power come out of him and especially on a 3-0 count. Hes usually very selective about swinging in those counts but he squared one up and it was important, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said about Abreus home run. Joel Pineiro started for the Halos and allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings for the no-decision. Torii Hunter went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored before leaving in the fifth inning after crashing into the wall to make a catch. X-Rays were negative and the outfielder is day-to-day. Hunter, the only Angels player to have appeared in all 76 games this season, has hit safely in 22 consecutive road games during interleague play and is riding a six-game hitting streak overall. Dan Haren hopes to erase the memories of his last performance when he takes the mound for the Angels tonight. Haren suffered through his worst loss of the season in last Saturdays 6-1 road defeat against the New York Mets, as he was reached for six runs and seven hits in four innings. Haren has alternated wins and losses over his last five starts, falling to 6-5 in 14 outings this season to go along with a 2.96 earned run average. These games happen, even to the best of them, Haren said. Its about how you bounce back. I never really got into a rhythm against the Mets. After the first inning, I felt a little out of sorts. I need to have a better feel for my curveball and split. Its just a feel -- Ive got to get the feel back. Haren has lost five of seven decisions since opening the 2011 campaign 4-0, and will make his 16th career appearance against the Dodgers. The right-hander is 4-5 with a 3.19 ERA over the first 15 games (14 starts) and is only 1-1 in his previous seven starts in this matchup. The Dodgers will wrap up a season-long 12-game, 14-day homestand with this series versus the Angels and had a three-game winning streak stopped with Wednesdays 7-5 loss to Detroit in the finale of a three-game series. Ted Lilly was banged around for six runs and six hits, including three home runs, over 4 2/3 innings to absorb the loss. Matt Guerrier also allowed a homer in relief, as Los Angeles fell to 3-6 on the residency and was denied its first sweep of the 2011 campaign. The Dodgers were also trying for the first four-game winning streak of the campaign and had kept the opposition from homering in seven straight games. Today was one of those days, Lilly said. I was behind in the count more than usual. When you try to pitch like that, the hitters are more comfortable and can shrink the strike zone and you have less room for error. The offense was led by James Loneys three hits and two RBI, while Matt Kemp ended 3-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored for the Dodgers, who lost for the ninth time in 14 tries. Andre Ethier had two hits, an RBI and a run scored in defeat. Kemp ended a three-game hitless drought and is batting .386 with eight homers, 16 runs and 22 RBI in his last 21 games (20 starts). Dodgers rookie Rubby De La Rosa will make his seventh start of the season tonight and is 3-1 with a 4.58 earned run average. He suffered the first loss of his career in last Saturdays 7-0 loss to Houston at Chavez Ravine and allowed a season-high five runs and six hits through 4 2/3 frames. The righty is 1-1 in three games, one of which was a start, at home and will face the Angels for the first time in his career. Anaheim won five of six matchups with the Dodgers a year ago and swept a three-game set at Chavez Ravine from June 11-13. wholesale nfl jerseys . KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Going 2-1 and stunning then-undefeated Green Bay as Kansas Citys interim head coach meant a lot more than gratification for Romeo Crennel. It also persuaded the Kansas City Chiefs to give the affable defensive specialist a second chance to be an NFL head coach. The Chiefs announced Monday that Crennel was the official replacement for the fired Todd Haley, removing the interim tag he bore for the last three weeks of the season. "The three games had a lot to do with where we arrived at this decision," general manager Scott Pioli said. "Some of the things we saw was a great deal of accountability and consistency. There was also a different energy to the football team. A lot of it had to do with those last three games." Warm and personable, the 64-year-old Crennel is a sharp departure from Haley. Often called a "players coach" hes been known to write off mistakes as youthful indiscretions. Ironically, being soft with players was a criticism when he was fired after four years as head coach in Cleveland with a 24-40 record. He was an instant hit with Chiefs players while serving as Haleys defensive co-ordinator the past two years. After the Chiefs beat the Packers 19-14 on Dec. 18 in their first game with Crennel in charge, the Chiefs chanted his nickname, "RAC! RAC!" as they ran up the tunnel. He was always considered the front-runner to replace Haley, even though Pioli said he interviewed "more than half a dozen" candidates. "Im not exactly sure what a players coach is," Crennel said. "Sometimes I think players think that a coach who is on their side is a players coach, who always rules in favour of them may be a players coach. I know thats not always the case with me. I think that basically, Im a good guy. And I think this is what players appreciate -- players appreciate honesty. Players appreciate you telling them like it is. They dont always want to hear it. But thats what they appreciate. I try to tell them what I believe, what I feel and how I think it should be done." With a core of good, young players, the Chiefs could be poised to become dominant in the AFC West. Crennel is the fifth head coach in Kansas City since the Chiefs last playoff win in the 1993 season Shortly after winning a Super Bowl title as New Englands defensive co-ordinator in 2004, Crennel was hired by Browns owner Randy Lerner, who hoped he would bring needed discipline and accountability to his young team. However, the Browns continued to have issues on and off the field and there was a general feeling Crennel was too lenient. When wide receiver Braylon Edwards cut his foot during training camp while running around in his socks, Crennel downplayed the incident as youthful immaturity, saying at the time: "Kids are kids and you look at kids and they take theiir shoes off and run around all the time. The Browns finished 10-6 in his third season, narrowly missing the playoffs, but fell to 4-12 in 2008, losing their last six games. Against Pittsburgh, Crennel was 0-8, including a 31-0 blowout in his final game. The Cleveland experience has helped him be a better head coach, he said. "Probably if I hadnt gone through that experience, I wouldnt be sitting here now," he said. "When youre in the seat for the first time, there are a lot of things that even though youre an assistant and think you have all the answers and know exactly whats going to happen, you dont know whats going to happen because things occur every day that youre not quite ready for. Thats one of the things that helped me in these last three games." Crennels lone defeat as interim coach came in overtime against Oakland, which knocked the Chiefs (7-9) from playoff contention. But they closed the season by beating Denver, giving them some momentum going into 2012. One of the biggest decisions facing Crennel and Pioli will be at quarterback. Veteran Kyle Orton, acquired shortly before Haley was fired, replaced the ineffective Tyler Palko in the last three games and engineered wins over two playoff teams, the Packers and Broncos. Orton is an unrestricted free agent, but many fans want him signed and competing with incumbent Matt Cassel, who was out most of the second half of the season with a hand injury. "Im probably not sitting here if Kyle hadnt done the job that he did," Crennel said. "And Im very appreciative of that. Im also appreciative of the fact he is an unrestricted free agent and we have to go through the process." Crennel was also noncommittal when asked about his staff, but did leave the door open that he could be his own defensive co-ordinator. First-year offensive co-ordinator Bill Muir came under criticism even though the offence was greatly weakened by season-ending injuries at the beginning of the year to tight end Tony Moeaki and Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles. Pioli also spoke to former Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher, Packers offensive co-ordinator Joe Philbin and former Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio. "One thing RAC said at the time was, I want you to go out and talk to other people because if you make this decision, I want you to know that youre making the right decision," Pioli said. Many players had said they wanted to win the last three games to help Crennel get the job. "Throughout the year, we were all over a little bit. We came to a common ground over the last three weeks," said fullback LeRon McClain. "We started doing good when Romeo stepped in." ' ' ' |
